Questions and answers.
For buyers
What is Holdipay?
With Holdipay, your payment stays locked while you buy from someone you don't know, for example on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or Vinted, or pay someone to do a job for you. They can see the money is secured, and it's only paid to them when you're happy.
When does the seller get paid?
Only when you release the money. If you meet up, you check the item and show the seller your release code. If it's posted, you release it when it arrives, or it's paid automatically 7 days after posting unless you report a problem. Until then, the seller can't touch the money.
What if something is wrong with the item?
Don't release the money. Report a problem instead and your payment stays on hold while our team looks at what happened. We aim to decide within 5 working days whether to refund you, pay the seller, or split it.
Read more about buyer protection.
Can I change my mind?
Yes, until the seller has added their payout details. Cancel and we refund the item price; the buyer protection fee isn't refunded, as it has already paid for the card processing. If the seller never sets up their payout, you get everything back, fee included, automatically after 14 days.
How much does it cost?
Buyers pay one buyer protection fee, shown before you pay: 2% + 30p, plus what the card payment and the payout to the seller cost. Sellers pay nothing. See fees for examples.
Can I use Holdipay for items being posted to me?
Yes. Choose "Posted to me" when you pay and give the seller your address in your chat. They post it and add a photo of the proof of postage. When it arrives and you're happy, release the payment. If you don't, it's paid to the seller automatically 7 days after posting, unless you report a problem first.
Can I use Holdipay to pay a tradesperson?
Yes. Choose "A job or service", describe the job and split the price into up to 6 stages you've agreed with them. You pay for the whole job upfront, and each stage is only paid when you release it, or automatically 7 days after they mark it done with photos unless you report a problem. See how it works.
What if the work stops halfway?
Stages you haven't released stay on hold. Report a problem and our team reviews what happened, including the photos of the work, and decides whether to refund what's still on hold, pay it, or split it. Stages already released stay paid.
For sellers
Do I need an account or an app?
No. Open the link the buyer sends you, confirm your mobile number with a text message code, and add your payout details. The Holdipay app is optional.
Do I have to pay anything to receive money?
Never. Holdipay will never ask a seller to pay a fee, enter card details, or send money to receive a payment. If anyone asks you to, it's a scam.
How do I get paid?
If you meet up, the buyer shows you a QR code or a 6-character code when they're happy: scan it or type it in. If you post it, add a photo of your proof of postage; you're paid when the buyer releases it, or automatically 7 days after posting unless they report a problem. The money usually reaches your bank within 1 to 3 working days.
I posted the item. What if the buyer never releases the payment?
As long as you've added proof of postage, the payment is released to you automatically 7 days after you confirmed posting. If the buyer reports a problem before then, such as the item not arriving, the payment stays on hold while our team reviews the evidence from both of you, including your proof of postage.
Who handles my bank details?
Stripe, one of the world's largest payment companies. Your bank and identity details go straight to Stripe and are never stored by Holdipay.
The buyer asked for photos of the item. What do I do?
Buyers can ask to see live photos or a short video. You take them with your phone's camera when you open the link, so the buyer knows the item is real. It doesn't change when you get paid.
I'm doing a job. How do I get paid?
The customer pays for the whole job upfront and you can see it's secured. When you finish a stage, take live photos of the work and mark it done. You're paid for that stage when the customer releases it, or automatically 7 days later unless they report a problem.
Can my limited company be paid?
Yes. When you add your payout details, choose "My limited company" and Stripe will ask for the company's details. Sole traders choose "Me".
About Holdipay
Is my money safe?
Payments are processed and held by Stripe, a regulated payment provider. Holdipay is not a bank and never holds your money in its own name.
How does Holdipay stop me getting scammed?
Buyers don't send money to a stranger. It's held by Stripe and only paid to the seller when the buyer releases it, after checking the item or the work.
Sellers can see the money is secured before they meet up or post anything, and their own screen tells them when they've been paid, so a fake payment screenshot won't work. See staying safe.
When can I start using Holdipay?
We're launching soon. This site will be updated when you can start.
Which countries does Holdipay work in?
Sellers can be paid in 31 countries, wherever our payment partner Stripe supports payouts. Buyers can pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card.

Who can use Holdipay?
Anyone aged 18 or over buying an item or paying for a job. Sellers and tradespeople can be individuals, sole traders or limited companies, with a bank account in one of the countries we support. Holdipay isn't for deposits, money transfers or online services. See prohibited items and services.
